The head of the renowned Wanderers cricket stadium here has been asked to step down in the wake of a dispute over the second edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa, a newspaper reported today.
Alan Kourie, the controversial president of the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB), which controls the Wanderers, was asked to take early retirement by the GCB Council because of irreconcilable differences between the two parties, the Afrikaans daily Sport24 said quoting an unnamed source.
Kourie was at loggerheads with the Cricket South Africa (CSA), challenging CSA chief executive Gerald Majola for refusing to disclose the details of the agreement reached with the IPL.
The second season of the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament was hosted in South Africa earlier this year as it clashed with the general elections in India.
In the tit-for-tat war of words that followed, CSA subsequently withdrew all international games from the Wanderers, a matter which was only resolved through Sports Minister’s intervention.
Sport24 said it had learnt that Kourie was seeking legal advice on the matter.
