Virender Sehwag pointed out that the gambit of adding steel to the batting helped in bringing the high-flying Pune Warriors down to earth. “We had strengthened our batting going into this match and were confident of chasing about 160 to 170. So when I won the toss, we fielded as planned,” said the Delhi Daredevils captain.
Delhi's first win was explained by Sehwag as the outcome of a team effort.
“Teams scoring 180 are ending up on the losing side. It happened to Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings before in this event. The wicket (D.Y. Patil stadium) was good to bat on so we knew chasing 160 to 170 was possible,” said the Daredevils icon, praising the contributions from Venugopala Rao and Adam Finch as timely.
Venugopala is one of Delhi's new signings this season and Sehwag is happy with the investment. “We signed him as a middle-order batsman capable of controlling the innings and attacking when the need arises. He showed that he could do what we expected,” said Sehwag about Venugopala's innings.
Team's target
Asked about his team's target this season, he stressed that qualifying for the semifinals was priority.
Yuvraj Singh's all-round effort (66 not out, four for 29) drew praise from his counterpart. “Yuvraj batted well, then got wickets but ended up on the losing side. He must be disappointed. I am happy to have won,” said Sehwag with a smile.
