For years the messages,
good, bad or ugly,
Had as companion
Someone trusted and reliable,
Sincerely standing by its job for 163 years,
Just to serve the public at large.
Bringing smiles of different hues,
Striking the sorrows of the blues,
Informed urgent things that were true.
Demises were condoled,
Sacrifices were honoured,
Accidents were reported.
Greetings were conveyed,
Anniversaries were wished,
Festivals were celebrated.
Appointments were declared,
Re-joining was ordered,
Transfers were informed.
Landline phones struck at first,
Mobiles gave the biggest blow,
Email laid it to the rest.
But when it was laid to rest,
There was no need for a telegram,
Everybody knew, now on nothing would be telegrammed.
