Khurshid's regret

Published - February 16, 2012 12:19 am IST

The Election Commission has reportedly closed the Salman Khurshid matter since the Minister has expressed regret. This was only expected after the President forwarded to the Prime Minister the Commission's plea to intervene. But the episode only reinforces that people in power can get away with all kinds of violations. The Model Code was violated by none other than the Union Law Minister. He could not have done it out of ignorance.

Mr. Khurshid was right in promising a nine per cent sub-quota for the minorities out of the 27 per cent OBC reservation. Considering the social and economic condition of Muslims, they require it. The Constitution should be amended suitably. A 4.5 per cent sub-quota will not help.
