The Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government’s first floor test in Maharashtra might have resulted in a victory for the government, but the undue haste with which newly elected Speaker Haribhau Bagde had his way with the proceedings has understandably left the Congress and the Shiv Sena fuming (“ >Fadnavis government carries the day ,” Nov.13). It is apparent that the voice vote was used to cover up any embarrassment that the BJP might have faced in case of a division where it would have become clear that the BJP had taken the support of the NCP. With the Sena now ranged firmly against the BJP, the State government will certainly find the going tough, especially as the NCP will now begin to demand its pound of flesh.

The trust vote constituted nothing but political skulduggery. The NCP’s support is but a quid pro quo for the dropping of the corruption cases against its leaders. No doubt, the Opposition will now seek the intervention of the judiciary.
