The West Bengal government's order to the government-sponsored and aided libraries to stock only some newspapers to develop “free thinking” among readers (April 11) is a direct attack on the right to freedom of speech and expression. The State with 77.1 per cent literacy rate is mature enough to decide what is good for free thinking.

Rajnish Goyal,

Bathinda

The ban on a number of newspapers is yet another whimsical action on the part of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The move will deprive vast sections dependent on public libraries of the right to read newspapers of their choice.

J. Anantha Padmanabhan,

Srirangam

The political misadventure is against the democratic principles of free speech and expression, which includes freedom of choice. It is strange that no one from the Trinamool Congress advised Ms Banerjee against such a move.
