It is interesting to note that Socrates, Homer and Jesus never wrote any book but they are still remembered. The teachings of Jesus produced a new religion and the philosophical thought of Socrates still reflects in the thinking of modern philosophers. The article (Oct. 19) was a good tribute to the famous Greek philosopher. One of his thoughts “Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty,” is inspiring. He was thinking of his own marital life when he said: “If you get a good wife, you are doubly blessed, if you don't get a good wife you will become a philosopher.”
On youth, Socrates said: “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannise their teachers.” Are not his words relevant and enlightening even today?
