On 49-O

This refers to the suggestions and views in this column about exercising one's option under rule 49-O of the Conduct of Elections Rules. While the Election Commission may make provisions in the EVM for this option in the years to come, I wonder whether voters willing to use this rule will be proactive in cleansing the electoral process, coordinating and networking with like-minded voters so that only honest candidates stand for elections.

I would like to point out that using the 49-O option elicits a negative response from voters. When a voter does not wish to vote for candidates from any of the political parties listed, he may be given a choice of opting for President's Rule. This I feel will keep out the corrupt, save our democracy and satisfy the voter for having voted for something concrete rather than done nothing at all.

I exercised my right in this election to use the 49-O option, and without any problems. I feel that many readers should have done their homework before going to vote. The procedure was given adequate publicity in the leading dailies and at the entrance to each polling booth.
