A team of veterinary surgeons attached to the Government Veterinary College and Research Insititute here removed a worm, setaria digitata, from the right eye of a six-year-old horse on Friday.

The veterinary surgeons termed the surgery as rare.

The team was led by S. Kathirvel. The continuing presence of the worm would have led to vision loss, according to the doctors.

The Pollachi-based owner of the horse spotted the worm three days ago, and took the horse to a local veterinary hospital. As it could not be removed, he brought the animal to the Veterinary College and Research Institute.

Nishanth said that he found the horse moving very slowly. His father noticed the worm.

According to the research institute sources, animals suffering from various serious diseases are brought there from various districts for specialised treatment.
