Family, fans to attend requiem for F1 great Niki Lauda

Family, friends and fans gathered on May 29 at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna for a last farewell to Formula One great Niki Lauda.

The wooden coffin of the three-time champion was decorated with his red racing helmet and surrounded by six white candles and rose wreaths with two large portraits of Lauda behind it. The Austrian died on May 20 at the age of 70, less than a year after undergoing a lung transplant.

Lauda, who won two of his Formula One titles after a horrific crash in which he suffered serious burns, later became a prominent figure in the aviation industry and in recent years served as a non-executive chairman of the Mercedes F1 team.

The Louvre museum in Paris has reopened to the public after it was closed on May 27, when workers complaining about overcrowding walked out.

Union representatives met May 29 morning and decided to reopen the museum at 11 a.m., some two hours after its regular opening time.

The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Union representatives have said that renovation work around the Mona Lisa, the museum’s most famous painting, has led to organisational problems, huge queues and harassment of staff by tourists.

They note that staff numbers have diminished over the past decade even though the number of visitors has risen 20%.

Scott Morrison was sworn in as Australia’s Prime Minister, 11 days after retaining the position in the country’s general election. Along with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Morrison was sworn in by Queen Elizabeth’s official representative in Australia, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, at a ceremony in the capital, Canberra.

Huawei said on Wednesday the tech giant will ask a US court to throw out US legislation that bars federal agencies from buying its products. The company was due to file the motion for summary judgment on Tuesday (Wednesday in China), said Song Liuping, the firm’s legal officer, in a statement carried by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

Several tornadoes reportedly touched down on Tuesday evening in Kansas to damage homes, uproot trees and rip down power lines, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. About 20 tornadoes, including a large rain-wrapped twister near Kansas City, were reported to the NWS by storm chasers and spotters as news broadcast images of roofs torn off homes and roads scattered with debris and tree limbs.
