Korean leaders visit 'sacred' mountain

The leaders of the rival Koreas took to the road for the final day of their summit Thursday, standing on the peak of a beautiful volcano considered sacred in the North and a centerpiece of propaganda used to legitimize the Kim family’s rule, their hands clasped and raised in a pose of triumph. Their trip to the mountain on the North Korean-Chinese border, and the striking photo-op that will resonate in both Koreas, followed a day of wide-ranging agreements they trumpeted as a major step toward peace.

Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in flew separately to an airport near Mount Paektu on Thursday morning where they then met up and drove to the mountain.

A Boeing 737/800 aircraft from Air India Express landed at the Kannur International Airport here at  on Thursday as part of the trial landing of larger aircraft.

The flight departed from Thiruvananthapuram airport in the morning hovered over the airport here for nearly 45 minutes before it touched down on the airport tarmac at 11.35 a.m.

Splendour' marked the ‘Rathotsavam' at the temple of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala on Thursday, the penultimate day of the nine-day annual Brahmotsavam.

The important days of the festival include Garuda Seva that was performed on September 17, Golden chariot (September 18) Rathotsavam (September 20) and Chakrasnanam on September 21.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu made customary presentation of a pair of ‘silk vastrams’ on behalf of the State government during ‘Dwajarohanam’ (inaugural event) of the festival.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won re-election as leader of his ruling party Thursday, setting him on course to become Japan's longest-serving premier and realise his dream of reforming the constitution.

The 63-year-old conservative secured 553 votes from lawmakers and party members against 254 won by former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba in a two-horse race for leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
