Congress petitions EC on Amit Shah's remarks during poll rally

The Congress urged the Election Commission (EC) Tuesday to issue a notice to BJP chief Amit Shah for a statement he had made in Telangana, which the opposition party alleged was aimed at creating a communal atmosphere in the poll-bound state.

Senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Kamal Nath and Kapil Sibal met EC officials and raised a number of issues, ranging from EVM-related complaints in Madhya Pradesh and Shah’s statement to the arrest of the opposition party’s working president in Telangana.

Mr. Shah’s statement in Telangana was absolutely false and misrepresented some points of the Congress’s poll manifesto in the southern state, Mr. Sibal told reporters after meeting the EC officials.

K. Taraka Rama Rao, son of Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Minister held a road show in Khammam on Tuesday.

A high-octane battle is on the cards in the Khammam constituency with the TDP, in alliance with the Congress, the CPI and Telagnana Jana Samiti, banking on the combined strength to win the high-profile seat in the December 7 elections.

The TDP has fielded its Polit Bureau member and former Khammam MP Nama Nageswara Rao in an apparent bid to revive its fortunes in the district, considered the political nerve centre of south Telangana.

The ruling TRS is pinning its hopes on the “development plank” to retain its sway in the constituency where it has fielded former MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar.

Mr. Ajay Kumar won from the constituency on Congress ticket in 2014, trouncing Tummala Nageswara Rao, who contested on TDP ticket, by a margin of 5,682 votes.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe was due to announce the suspension later on Tuesday, the source said, although it was unclear whether he would announce a time-limited “moratorium” or abandon the next carbon-tax increase entirely.

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran and U.S. officials say they aim to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero in a bid to curb the Islamic Republic's missile programme and regional influence.
