The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the temperatures in Telangana are set to cross 40 degrees in a week, and some 15 to 20 heatwave days are expected in this calendar year’s summer season (March to May 2019).
In case of Hyderabad, it will take around two weeks to cross 40 degrees. This summer, 0.5 to one degree above normal temperatures are expected to be recorded in the State. Heatwave is abnormally high temperatures, above 45 degrees or departure of five to six degrees from normal temperatures.
Those living in northern Telangana districts, including Adilabad, Medak and Warangal, will experience scorching heat as 47 to 48 degrees is expected to be recorded there on some days. Temperatures around 45 degrees might be recorded in Hyderabad.
Releasing the ‘ÍMD Outlook for hot weather season, March-May-2019’ here on Friday, Director in-charge of Meteorological Centre-Hyderabad Y. K. Reddy said: “from here on (March 1), temperatures will gradually rise by 0.2 to 0.3 degrees. It will be the highest from mid of May till onset of Monsoon.”
When data from 2008 to 2018 is considered, the highest of 46 heatwave days in Telangana was recorded in 2010, followed by 33 heatwave days in 2009. In 2018, seven heatwave days were recorded.
The highest-ever temperature recorded in Telangana was in Bhadrachalam, which was 48.6 degrees in May 1973.
