Most of the people who were struck in traffic gridlock in Hyderabad for two to four hours on Friday night when the State received first monsoon showers poured out their grievances and wanted to know if the government machinery had any solution to such situations. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) monsoon preparedness was questioned as many parts of the city were inundated after a few hours of rain.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) commissioner M Dana Kishore said that the drainage system in the city could handle rains only up to two cm per hour and that there would be issues if it rained above that mark. Altogether, a total of 197 major inundation points were identified in the city. Of them, measures were taken to avoid the issue in 37 points. Officials said that the remaining 160 points were categorised into A, B, C grades.

The GHMC would permanently install motor pumps at the points categorised under Category-A. Work force would be provided to pump out water when it accumulated. Motors would be installed at Category-B Points too. Designated teams would swing into action and pump out water when the area was inundated.

Rain forecast

Hyderabad Meteorological Centre officials predicted light to moderate rain or thunderstorm in many parts of the State for Monday. On Sunday, it rained heavily across the city. The highest of 66.3 mm of rainfall was recorded in Jubilee Hills. Over 50 mm rainfall was recorded in five localities.
