Geological Survey of India recently augmented 89.22 metric tonnes of iron ore resources from Yerraballi, Arnakonda and Chandoli Ambaripeta blocks in Karimnagar, Rebbannapalli, Adilabad and Gurimalla, Dabripet, Abbapur and Mallampalli in Khammam and Warangal districts. The details were released by M. Sridhar, additional director general of GSI.
GSI also discovered diamondiferous kimberlite pipe, rocks which may contain diamonds in Vajrakarur field in Anantapur district. “Investigation for manganese in Tumkur of Karnataka was carried out and estimated resources of 3 metric tonnes of manganese ore was found,” said Mr. Sridhar. An area of 390 sq. km. was identified as highly favourable zone for gold mineral in parts of Anantapur district.

He added GSI would conduct a research in Uddanam area in Srikakulam district where deaths relating to unidentified kidney ailments were widely reported.
Taking stock of GSI’s work for the past 10 years, five auctionable reports were submitted to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, he added. The reports detail limestone exploration at Tadutla in Guntur, Chintalayapalli in Kurnool, Hoskote and Belgaum and gold in Ajjanhalli of Karnataka.
Mr. Sridhar was talking at a press meet here on Wednesday. He said seismic hazard microzonation studies were carried out by GSI in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Puducherry, Trichur, Kochi, Ernakulam, Mangaluru.
A total of 4,20,000 sq. km. area across the country is prone to landslides of which 64,751 sq. km. falls in Southern region of GSI.
GSI carried out landslide susceptibility mapping in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Chickamagaluru districts of Karnataka and also detailed site specific study of Biligeri slide, Neriya landslide, Kadwad landslide and Sasnwad landslide. In Tamil Nadu, landslide susceptibility mapping was carried out in parts of Theni, Coimbatore, Nilgiri, Dindigul, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Virudunagar and Kanyakumari districts, he added.
GSI Southern region comprises six states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, along with Puducherry.
