The salient features of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences)Act 2012 and steps to be taken for investigation of cases booked under this Act were discussed in detail at the day-long workshop for police officers held at the District Police Office here on Saturday.

The awareness programme was organised by the Salem District Police.

G. Subbulakshmi, Superintendent of Police, presided over the inaugural and she urged the participants to take full advantage of the programme to update themselves with the POCSO Act.

Sivakumar, Professor, Government Law College, Madurai, was the resource person, and he said that the Act was formulated to effectively address sexual exploitation of children. He explained the legal procedures to be followed while registering cases under this Act and during the course of investigation.

He also explained in detail the techniques to be adopted while making enquiry with the affected children. Mr. Sivakumar imparted specialised training on the procedures to the followed during the court proceedings. Additional Superintendents of Police, Deputy Superintendents of Police, Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors of Police, participated in the session.
