Work on fixing of railings on the sides of subway is currently in progress at the Erode Railway Junction.

The railings are meant to provide support to the elderly when they walk along the subway that is nearly 200 metres long, between the entrance and the platforms.

Last year, an air-conditioned waiting hall was inaugurated as an elderly-friendly facility.

There is, however, little progress in the proposal to operate battery cars for the elderly and sick passengers. The battery cars are essential not only for subways but also the four platforms.

Also, a lengthy delay on the part of the Railways in installing lifts and escalators is perceptible. Passengers, irrespective of their age, have to climb many steps to reach the platform.

The funds have already been allotted for the purpose and the process for establishing the facilities has been set in motion, official sources said.
