A 48-year old woman sitting on the balcony of her two-storey house in Mogappair was killed on Thursday when the ceiling collapsed.

She, however, managed to save her eight-month-old granddaughter, who was asleep on her lap.

The incident occurred at 2.30 p.m. when the deceased, identified as Lakshmi, was stringing flowers. Her family had been living on the first floor of the building on Karnan Street for the last 15 years.

Husband injured

On Thursday afternoon, she was sitting on the balcony with her granddaughter Rakshna. Her husband Natrajan was sitting beside them. Suddenly, the ceiling started cracking. Lakshmi noticed it and bent forward to shield the child.

A portion of concrete fell on her and her husband. Neighbours and passers-by came to their rescue, but found Lakshmi dead. Her granddaughter was rescued and is safe.

Two youth passing by were also injured.

Natrajan and Mahesh were pulled out of the debris.
