The residents of Koolamedu and its surrounding villages near Attur hoisted black flags atop their houses demanding that permission be given to hold jallikattu in the village as part of Pongal celebrations.
Jallikattu has been a regular annual event in Koolamedu village panchayat for the last several decades. More than 250 bulls from Koolamedu and its surrounding villages used to participate in the jallikattu every year.
The committee for organising the event had already submitted an application to the district authorities seeking permission.
Since the permission is not forthcoming following the Supreme Court verdict, the residents hoisted the black flags atop the houses.
Later, the women performed an ‘oppari’ (crying) beating their chests in front of a few bulls.
A. Kandasamy, former Koolamedu village panchayat president and chairman of the Jallikattu Organising Committee told The Hindu that they were still hopeful that permission will be granted for holding the event in the village.
The committee had already made all arrangements for jallikattu and is waiting for the nod from the authorities.
A meeting of the organising committee will be held on Tuesday evening to discuss the matter, Mr. Kandasamy said.
