For the third year in a row, Vellore district’s overall pass percentage in the Plus Two board examinations has improved marginally. The district has registered an overall pass percentage of 87.06 this year, an increase by 2.07%, from 2017.
With this, the district, though it continued to be in the bottom half of the overall State rankings, has moved up the ladder this year. It has improved its ranking in the State from 31 to 27 in terms of pass percentage.
In the last three years, the district has been improving its pass percentage in the Plus Two examination. After registering 81.3% in 2015, the pass percentage saw a marginal increase in 2016 with 83.13%. In 2017, the district bettered its performance by registering a pass percentage of 84.99.
This year, out of the total 41,696 students (19,457 boys and 22,239 girls), who appeared for the examination, 36,301 (15,856 boys and 20,445 girls) have passed. Girls have outdone boys by securing a pass percentage of 91.93. A total of 81.49% of the boys have passed.
S. Mars, chief educational officer, Vellore, said the pass percentage of Vellore has steadily been improving over the last three years. “We took a number of initiatives to motivate the students and the teachers. We asked schools to conduct daily slip tests for all subjects for the students. This helped in improving the overall performance,” he said. He added that the department would concentrate on enabling boys to perform better in the board examinations. As there is a 10% variation between the pass percentage of boys and girls, he said they would take efforts to reduce this variation, so that the overall pass percentage improves. “We will motivate boys and explain the importance of education to them,” he added.
Centum results
The number of schools that have achieved centum results have also gone up in the district. Last year, a total of 40 schools achieved 100% results. This year, a total of 55 schools, including three government schools and an Adi Dravidar Welfare (ADW) school, have secured 100% results. The Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Sholinghur, Government Higher Secondary School. Jangalapalli, Government Higher Secondary School at Sundarampalli and Government ADW Higher Secondary School, Perumugai have achieved 100% result.
Government school students in Vellore district have achieved a pass percentage of 82.70. A total of 21,854 students from 165 government schools appeared for the exam. Of this, 18,073 students have passed.
Holy Cross Higher Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired, Sathuvachari, has secured 100% pass in the Plus Two examination. Eight students of the school have passed.
