The 'kumbabhishekam' at Vedaranyeswarar temple at Vedaranyam was marked by piety and pomp on Monday.

A large number of devotees offered worship to Sri Vedaranyeswarar at Vedaraynam near here on the occasion of ‘maha kumbhabhishekam’ on Monday.

Amidst religious fervour, the holy ‘gadams’ were brought from the yagasalai and around 9.15 a.m., the holy waters were sprinkled on the “kalasam”.

The kumbabhishekam was simultaneously performed for the vimanams of Sri Veenavadha Vidhushani Ambal, the consort of Sri Vedaranyeswarar.

The temple is considered more important from the historical and religious point of view. Tight security was provided for the smooth conduct of the renovation. The renovation was taken up at an expenditure of Rs. 47.43 lakh and apart from maintenance, amenities were provided to the devotees. The temple was renovated last in July 2000.

KUMBAKONAM: In similar rituals, six temples dedicated to Sri Adivaraha Perumal, Sri Kalahastheeswarar, Sri Koteeswarar, Sri Adhikampattu Viswanathaswamy, Sri Abhimukeswarar and Sri Banapureeswarar were renovated. All the six temples form part of the chain of 17 temples associated with the “mahamaham”.

With this, the HR and CE had completed the renovation of 15 ‘mahamaham’ temples while the remaining two temples would be renovated next month, according to official sources. This apart, “kumbabhishekam” for nine temples all in and around Kumbakonam was performed.
