‘Irregularities in admissions will be weeded out through surprise visits’

While the teachers of colleges of education will have to use the language labs to its optimal level in the years to come to educate the budding teachers more effectively, the teaching faculty will be evaluated periodically by the students apart from the mandatory self-appraisal in a bid to keep them well informed, G. Visvanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University, has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Dr. Visvanathan said the proposal to increase the duration of the one-year B.Ed. programme to two years, which would be decided by the High Court, had been designed in such a way to offer a lot to the students and the teachers as well.

Journals

Since the entire programme had been based on honing the skills of the teachers and the students, they would have to learn a lot with the help journals in the libraries.

While the exams – 9 papers in the first year and 7 papers in the second year – the students had to write would bring out the best out of the budding teachers, this skill-based system would fine-tune their calibre.

Moreover, the optional papers like inclusive education that would explain in detail the methods of teaching special children with learning difficulties would mould the budding teachers as complete educators.

Teaching practice

The 40-day teaching practice increased to 20 week – four week in the first year and 16 week in the second year – would make them more confident and mould them as a full-fledged teacher.

The teachers would have to use the language labs to its optimum level as it would become one of the vital teaching tools with which the students could be made confident while handling language classes.

“The teachers had been given a comprehensive training in using teaching tools, particularly the language lab to its optimal level. The teachers and the students should make use of their digital libraries where a minimum of 10 journals including 3 international journals and 6,000 books on 400 topics relating to teaching should be kept,” Dr. Visvanathan also said.

The Vice-Chancellor, who held discussions with the representatives of various colleges of education, said that irregularities, if any, in admissions would be weeded out through surprise visits and appropriate action would be taken on complaints.
