The India Meteorological Department announced on Thursday that the cyclonic circulation over the south-west Bay of Bengal off the south Sri Lanka coast may not intensify into a low-pressure area. However, it would continue to bring rain of very heavy intensity over south Tamil Nadu and gradually cover north coastal and adjoining districts till November 29.

Holiday declared for schools and colleges

Holiday declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Tiruchi districts on Saturday in view of the rain forecast.

IMD prediction

In the latest bulletin, the IMD has predicted heavy rain at a few places with isolated very heavy rain is likely to occur over Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikkal area.

91 flood shelters opened in Chennai for residents of low lying areas

A total of 56 streets in 23 residential areas were inundated on Friday as the city received over 46 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

As many as 620 residents were provided accommodation and food in flood shelters at five localities of the city. A total of 91 flood shelters have been opened for residents in low lying areas near major waterways such as Kosasthalaiyar, Adyar, Cooum and Buckingham canal.

The release of water from Poondi has been the highest among the reservoirs, with the discharge touching 4248 cusecs on Friday. Areas such as Manali were inundated on Friday.

Holiday for educational institutes in Puducherry and Karaikal

In view of rain forecast for next few days, holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on November 26 and 27.- Tamil Nadu bureau

Kayalpattinam receives highest amount of rain in the last 24 hours

Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi district has received an extremely heavy rains of 31 cm till 8.30 a.m. on Friday. This is the highest amount of rain received in the State during the past 24 hours- Tamil Nadu bureau

Traffic diversions announced at K.K. Nagar

To facilitate the draining of water at Anna main Road in front of K.K. Nagar GH the traffic proceeding towards Udhayam theatre will be allowed whereas traffic entering the road are diverted via Ashok Pillar.

Heavy and widespread rain in central region

Several parts of the central region, including the Cauvery delta districts, received heavy overnight rainfall.

Nagapattinam town took the brunt of the rain fury recording 171.20 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on Friday.

Most other parts of the central region, including Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai and Tiruchi districts, received moderate to heavy rainfall.

Heavy rain pounds several parts of the State; Chennai wakes up to thunderstorms

Heavy rains pounded several parts of the State under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast.

Chennai woke up to a heavy downpour and thunderstorms as many weather stations in and around the city registered moderate to heavy spells of rains.

IMD has issued an orange alert for Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari as rains may be very heavy on Friday and yellow alert for north coastal districts like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Cuddalore as heavy rains are possible till Saturday morning.

Educational institutes across several districts declared a holiday owing to heavy rains.

District administrations of Chennai, Nagapattinam, Tiruchi and Tiruvarur, Vellore, Pudukottai, Virudhunagar, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, districts, declared a holiday for schools and colleges, whereas all schools of  Namakkal , Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Kallakurichi, have been ordered to shut today- Tamil Nadu bureau

Cyclonic circulation to bring heavy rain in Tamil Nadu till month-end

On Thursday, the IMD issued the red alert for Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam as these districts were expected to receive isolated extremely heavy rain. Torrential rain pounded Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, inundating several areas and affecting life.

The rainfall may turn more intense in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts on Saturday and Sunday. Heavy rain is likely to lash more than 15 districts, including the Cauvery delta districts, Chengalpattu, the Nilgiris, Salem, Erode and Puducherry, on Saturday. Chennai may experience heavy rain in some areas till the weekend.
