DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise him of the “looming agricultural crisis in the State”, as well as the “outpouring of public sentiment” as a result of the non-implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Cauvery water sharing dispute.
In a letter penned on behalf of Opposition leaders, Mr. Stalin sought Mr. Modi’s intervention in the issue, saying the people of Tamil Nadu had given up the hope that the current State government would effectively represent their voice and ensure that their rights were protected.
‘Reprimand Minister’
He requested the Prime Minister to direct the Ministry of Water Resources to withdraw the clarification petition pending before the Supreme Court immediately, and to implement the Supreme Court’s order by constituting the Cauvery Management Board at the earliest.
“Do not wait till the next hearing on May 3 or for the Karnataka Assembly elections. Reprimand the Union Water Resources Minister and the Secretary for their inappropriate and contumacious interviews, which have further vitiated the issue,” Mr. Stalin wrote in his letter.
Disputes govt. claim
Recalling the claim of the State government that the resolutions passed during the all-party meeting and in the Assembly had been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Stalin noted that the Union Minister of State for Finance, Pon. Radhakrishnan, had informed the media that there was no record of even a request for an appointment from the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
