Special courts for exclusive trial of land grab cases in the State are to be initially constituted in Tirunelveli, Krishnagiri, Salem, Erode and Tirupur.

A decision to this effect was taken by the administrative committee of the Madras High Court, headed by Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal.

The panel had accepted the reasons justifying the constitution of the special courts.

It decided to create such courts in a phased manner.

Initially, the facility would be provided in five places, according to a High Court press release. Originally, the State government had requested the High Court to form 25 special courts.

The High Court wanted a corresponding increase in the cadre strength of judicial officers in the rank of Civil Judge (Junior Division) and also the requisite infrastructure.

The government accepted the requests and orders were issued for increasing the cadre strength and also for sanctioning additional staff and other corresponding facilities for the special courts.

It had said a large number of complaints of land grabbing had been received throughout the State and the number of cases ready for trial was also increasing.

Hence, there was a need for forming the special courts.
