SHRC orders probe

A day after two persons were shot dead in a police encounter in Madurai, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Friday ordered a probe into the incident and sought a report.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports about the incident, the Commission directed the Director General of Police and the Director of the Investigation Division of the SHRC to launch an inquiry into the incident and submit a report to the Registrar within eight weeks.

The probe should be conducted by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, the Commission noted.

According to media reports, two persons facing murder charges were shot dead by a team of Madurai city police personnel at a house in Sikkander Chavadi in the city on Thursday evening.

The deceased were identified as I. Muthurulandi alias Manthiri, 25, and M. Karthik alias Saguni Karthik, 26. The police claimed to have fired in self-defence after the accused opened fire at them.

The police team, led by Inspector Manivannan, attached to the Sellur police station, had come to the house of one Mayakannan on Manthaiammankoil Street off the Madurai-Alanganallur highway, looking for the two history-sheeters. The duo was suspected of involvement in a murder case dating back to 2015.
