Set up Cauvery Management Board without delay, says Vasan

June 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - THANJAVUR:

The Centre must constitute the Cauvery Management Board and form the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee without any further delay as in their absence the delta farmers have been forced to suffer loss of kuruvai crop yet again, Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan said here on Sunday.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Vasan pointed out that despite pleadings from the parties across the entire political spectrum in the State, the Centre has not lent an ear to the genuine demands of the Tamil Nadu farmers and that has ruined their livelihood for yet another season now. With storage in the Mettur dam none too encouraging, farmers were in need of State support to tide over the crisis.

Only when the Centre shows some resolve in apportioning water among the required States in the Cauvery basin could the genuine demands of the farmers be met everywhere. That could be done only by forming the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, he said.

Mr. Vasan condemned the free run of liquor in Tamil Nadu and pointed out that the moral calibre and fabric of the youth have taken a beating due to the influence of alcohol. The TMC would intensify its fight against the present liquor policy, he said.
