The city Municipal Corporation has paid Rs. 1.27 crore as maintenance charges to the Salem Railway Division for pipelines to be laid under the railway tracks at Shevapet.
The Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme is being implemented by the Corporation at a total cost of Rs. 320.54 crore in two phases.
The phase I of the scheme, including construction of treatment plant at Thottilpatti and laying of main pipeline from Mettur to Mamangam was completed at a cost of Rs. 172.12 crore and trial run commenced from February, 2014.
The phase II of the scheme includes construction of 22 overhead tanks in the city and laying of main feeder line. The main pipeline has to cross the Salem - Bangalore National Highway 7 at Redipatti Junction and permission was obtained from National Highways Authority of India and pipeline was laid using trenchless technology.
A new pipeline, measuring 1100 mm diameter to 1700 mm diameter has to cross railway tracks in Shevapet. The Corporation has asked permission from the Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Railway Division for laying the pipelines.
The railways had asked the Corporation to pay Rs. 1,27,92,025 as maintenance charge for the tracks after laying pipelines. Hence, funds were sanctioned by the Corporation and permission is expected from the railways at the earliest.
A resolution was also passed in the council meeting held on Wednesday.
