The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has collected road taxes and fees to the tune of Rs. 34.10 crore after registering 13,621 vehicles, including 838 cars, in the district during 2014-15.
Giving the details to reporters here on Friday, Regional Transport Officer J. Sheik Mohamed said that 13,621 new vehicles, including 11,000 two-wheelers, 233 goods vehicles, 42 school buses, 85 maxi cabs and 14 buses, were registered.
He said that there was a marginal decline in the number of vehicles registered during 2014-15 compared to the previous year. During 2013-14, a total of 14,000 vehicles were registered, he said.
Mr. Mohamed said that from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015, the office had booked 2,123 vehicles for traffic violations and collected fine and tax amounts totalling Rs. 62.42 lakh.
The traffic violation cases were booked for speeding, overloading of passengers and goods, driving without licence, improper number plates and for not wearing helmets, he said.
Driving licences of 77 drivers were temporarily cancelled after they were booked for rash driving, drunk driving and causing fatal accidents after violating traffic rules, he added.
After inspecting the sites of fatal accidents, the RTO identified 10 accident-prone areas in the district and erected speed breakers, installed barricades, fixed reflectors and warning signboards to prevent recurrence of accidents there, he said.
To ensure safety of schoolchildren travelling in school buses, the office launched the annual inspection drive last week and he inspected 356 of the 438 school buses and issued Fitness Certificates (FC). Eighty-two more buses would be inspected before the reopening of the schools, he said.
Mr. Mohamed had refused FC to 13 buses for having various defects. While seven buses rectified the defects and obtained FC, the other buses were given time till school reopening, he said.
