In the next step towards admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, lots were drawn in schools across the State, which had received more applications than the seats allotted, on Monday.
“While private matriculation schools from major cities and towns have received a large number of applications, nursery schools in smaller villages are the ones which still have seats vacant. In Chennai, for instance, lots were drawn for admissions at the Valliammai Matric Higher Secondary school in Anna Nagar where 23 seats have been allotted to students who had applied and a waitlist of 9 students has been prepared as well, out of nearly 100 applications that the school had received,” said S. Kanappan, Director of Matriculation schools.
The Department had received over 1.28 lakh applications for over 90,000 seats in private matriculation as well as nursery schools. Under the RTE Act, 25% of the seats in entry-level classes have been reserved for admissions for the economically weaker sections in private schools.
While the School Education Department had carried out admissions under the RTE Act in multiple phases last year to fill up the seats, the department will take a decision on calling for another round of applications after assessing the number of seats filled.
