Even before the rainy season has begun, the city roads have turned into slush with sewage stagnating on roads. Pothole-ridden roads are common in most of the residential areas.
The city municipal Corporation’s ambitious underground drainage work, laying of pipelines for Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme and laying of underground cables by the Tangedco have left most of the roads damaged.
After many years, the arterial roads are currently being re-laid by the Corporation. But the pathetic condition of roads in residential areas continues. In the absence of drainage, sewage stagnates on the road, and due to clogging, the sewage flows on the road at many areas. Roads dug for various works were not re-laid for many years now and water stagnates on roads turning the place a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“We are used to pothole-ridden roads for more than three years now,” says a resident on Convent Road. Residents in the area say that the road was dug five times in three years, but was not re-laid even once. “Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians are the worst affected,” says M. Kandasamy, a resident of Mittapudur.
The Corporation officials say that a proposal has been sent to the Government for re-laying the roads dug for various works. But the proposal has been revised many times and hence sanctioning of funds is delayed. They are hopeful that most of the roads dug for various works will be re-laid within a year.
However, residents wanted gravels to be filled in potholes and repair works to be carried out on all the roads to make it motorable.
“Let the Corporation carry out repair works on a war footing before the arrival of the monsoon,” they add.
