P. Nedumaran, president, Ulaga Tamizhar Peramaippu, and 80 others, who were granted bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday, were not released till late Thursday evening as the Tiruchi Central Prison authorities did not receive the court order.
Following Wednesday’s High Court order, members of the Peramaippu, cadre of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other organisations fighting for the cause of Tamils, waited in front of the prison since morning, expecting the release of Mr. Nedumaran and others.
Around dusk, police politely advised them to disperse as per jail norms. The police assured them that the release would be effected shortly after the receipt of the order and completion of administrative procedures.
Meanwhile, according to advocates of Mr. Nedumaran, the Madurai Bench had stipulated the release of all the persons on the production of personal bond before Judicial Magistrate, Thanjavur.
Initially, a clarification was sought as to whether Mr. Nedumaran and others could be released directly in Tiruchi, or whether the release should take place only after producing them before the Thanjavur court.
