Rain lashes Kanyakumari district

Maximum rainfall of 87 mm registered in catchment areas of Mambazhathuraiaru

Rain lashed many parts of Kanyakumari district on Friday night. The maximum rainfall of 87 mm was registered in the catchment areas of Mambazhathuraiaru.

Catchment areas of the major dams of Pechiparai and Perunchani also received rain. There was good flow of water in Thirparappu falls. It being a weekend, tourists thronged the falls and enjoyed bathing.

The district has been experiencing a salubrious climate for the past two weeks.

Rain was also reported in Surulode, Adayamadai, Colachel, Eraniel and Kozhiporvilai.

Due to the rain, water level in the dams is rising quickly and is monitored by the WRO officials of the Public Works Department. With intermittent rain continuing in the hilly areas such as Balamore, water inflow into Pechiparai and Perunchani dams has considerably increased.

Water level of the Pechiparai dam stood at 41.65 feet as against its full height of 48 feet and inflow into the dam was 427 cft.

Similarly, water level of the Perunchani dam stood at 73.05 feet against its full level of 77 feet. The inflow into the dam was 507 cft and the discharge was maintained at 77 cft on Saturday.

Tamiraparani river in Kuzhithurai and Pazhayar in Suchindram are overflowing and other small canals in the district are also brimming with water. Many ponds are filling up fast.

Water level in Chitrar I dam was 15.97 against its full level of 18 feet, water inflow was 218 cft and the discharge 200 cft.

Rainfall recorded in important stations in the district (in mm): Perunchani 49.8, Chitrar I 9.2, Chitrar II 46.2, Puthananai 51, Eraniel 37, Surulode 68.6, Adayamadai 28, Mullanginavilai 6, Nagercoil 4.8, Colachel 3 and Boothapandi 2.
