Rail traffic hit as overhead cables snap near Vellore

Six trains plying towards Chennai Central and two trains plying from Chennai Central were delayed

Rail traffic was disrupted for over two hours after an overhead power cable snapped between Tirupattur (Vellore district) and Kangankarai (Salem district) railway stations during the early hours of Friday.

As a result, six trains plying towards Chennai Central and two trains plying from Chennai Central were delayed.

According to officials of Southern Railway, the Madurai – Chennai Central Duronto Express (Train number 22206) was about to pass when the overhead wire cut at 4.30 a.m. As a result, rail traffic along the up line was disrupted, while the down line was available for traffic. Works were taken up to rectify the overhead wire. Officials said the overhead power line was restored at 9.20 a.m.

Eight trains including Thiruvananthapuram Central-Chennai Central Mail (12624), Mangaluru Central – Chennai Central Superfast Express (12686), Ernakulam Chennai Central Special (06060), Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Central Super Fast Express (12696), Thiruvananthapuram Central - Shalimar Super Fast Express (22641) and Ernakulam-Hyderabad Special (07118) were delayed for two to two-and-a-half hours, an official said.
