PMK founder S. Ramadoss and party MP (Rajya Sabha) Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday participated in an event near Chennai Central Railway Station to raise awareness about the need for the Centre and the State governments to act immediately on the climate change crisis.

Reaffirming his faith in the State government and pledging support for it even in 2021 Assembly elections, Dr. Ramadoss said the climate change scientists had predicted severe consequences due to climate change. “We are planning to do similar awareness raising events across 23 places in Chennai city. We have to take every effort to solve this crisis. In the future, we are going to face extraordinary drought and rains. The government should take steps to deal with it,” said Dr. Ramadoss.

The global temperature had increased by 1 degree Celsius ever since the industrial revolution. “If we don’t act immediately, there will be a 5 degree Celsius increase. Use of fossil fuel and increase in greenhouse gasses are being seen as the major reason for increase in temperature. The use of fossil fuel should be reduced by half by 2030 and completely by 2050,” he said.

He demanded a reduction in fossil fuels, drawing up progressive transport systems, efficient water management and solid waste management.

Dr. Anbumani said that his party would continue to fight for alcohol prohibition.

“Almost every party — the DMK, the AIADMK, the Congress — has accepted our position on alcohol prohibition and that itself is a major victory for us. We will continue to push for it,” Dr. Anbumani added.
