Periyar row: TNPSC regrets error

A day after a Group – II exam question paper of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) referred to the late social reformer ‘Thanthai Periyar’ E.V. Ramasamy by his caste name, prompting a backlash from political parties, the Commission on Monday expressed regret over the mistake.

In one of the objective type questions in the paper, the late leader’s name was mentioned as E.V. Ramasamy Naicker. An official release from TNPSC Secretary and Controller of Examinations (in-charge) K. Nanthakumar stated that the Commission had been preparing question papers with experienced professors for the past 70 years. “The TNPSC expresses regret for the mistake [in] identifying ‘Thanthai Periyar’ in [the] Group – II question paper,” it said.

DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the State government to ensure that those responsible for the mistake were removed from service.
