The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police on Monday arrested an arrack shop owner from neighbouring Puducherry for allegedly supplying arrack to the locals here.

The name of the accused was given as Nagarajan, 55, of Aranganur in Puducherry. He has been remanded in custody.

According to the police, acting on a tip-off, a team was conducting vehicle checks at Kannarapettai when they intercepted an autorickshaw without any registration number and seized 120 litres of arrack smuggled in two polythene bags.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the autorickshaw driver Kalaimani had purchased the liquor from Nagarajan’s shop in Puducherry. The police arrested Nagarajan and registered a case against him under relevant sections. He was produced before a local court and remanded in custody.
