October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - TUTICORIN:

The Mahila Court here has sentenced a married man to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment for impregnating a 25-year-old woman on the promise of marrying her.

According to prosecution, T. Sivasubramaniam (35) of Udankudi developed physical intimacy with the woman from the same area on the promise of marrying her after divorcing his wife. As she became pregnant, the woman appealed to him to marry her, but he refused.

When she gave birth to a baby girl on February 25, 2013, she renewed her attempt to marry Sivasubramaniam, who turned down her plea again.

Agitated over this, the woman filed a complaint with Udankudi police who arrested Sivasubramanian. A DNA test categorically proved that Sivasubramanian was the biological father of the baby.

Fine imposed

Mahila Court Judge J. Flora also slapped a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the accused on Tuesday.
