One catamaran was set afire and four other catamarans were slightly damaged by miscreants at Puthantharuvai on Tuesday evening.

According to police, the people of Puthantharuvai raised objection to fishermen from Periyathalai fishing in a pond, which is under the control of the Public Works Department. Despite the objections, the fishermen from Periyathalai started fishing in the waterbody. This resulted in a clash, following which the catamarans were targeted by the local people.

Based on a complaint lodged by X. Billburt (57) of West Street, Kulandai Yesu Colony, Periyathalai, a case was filed by Thattarmadam police.

Investigation is under way.
