It is not proper for Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to hold the portfolio of vigilance when she is facing a disproportionate assets case filed by the Vigilance Department in a special court in Bangalore, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said on Saturday.

In a statement, he cited the decision of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to give up the portfolio following the Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Special Court's order for a reinvestigation into his role in the palmolein case during his tenure as Finance Minister in the 1991-1995 Karunakaran Ministry.

As for Ms. Jayalalithaa's call to Assembly Speaker not to enlist questions that would elicit a negative response from Ministers who were replying for the first time, Mr. Karunanidhi said it was inexplicable under which rule of the House this could be accommodated.
