A total of 80,050 households in the district did not have toilet facilities. All residents should come forward to construct individual toilets and avoid open defecation to keep the surroundings clean and tidy, said Collector N. Venkatachalam.

Taking part in a gram sabha meeting held at Koozhaiyanur village near here on Friday, he said that a subsidy of Rs.12,000 would be given for the construction of toilets. Beneficiaries should avail the subsidy and construct the toilets. Community participation was essential for the success of the total sanitation programme. Awareness on cleanliness and clean environment should be created among the rural and urban masses to achieve ‘Clean India,’ he added. Later, the Collector gave away aid worth Rs.15,000 each to six beneficiaries of poverty eradication committee at the village, he added.
