On Saturday when four boats were intercepted by the Sri Lankan Navy, their nets ripped off and catch seized, fishermen of Nagapattinam block began an indefinite strike demanding an end to attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
In addition, the fishing habitations here would start a relay fast from Monday.
The boats, two each from Nagapattinam and Nagore, were intercepted off Kameshwaram by Sri Lankan naval personnel, who boarded their boats and seized their catch, it was alleged.
In a meeting of eight fishing habitations of Nagapattinam here on Saturday, resolutions were passed condemning the Sri Lankan Government and Navy for sustained attacks on the fishermen.
The fishing habitations of Kallar, Aryanattutheru, Keechankuppam, Akkarapettai, Nambiyar Nagar, Nagore Melatheru, Sellur and Samanthapettai have proposed to mobilise support from Karaikal fishermen and intensify their agitation in the coming days.
It also came down on the Centre and the Indian Navy and Coast Guard for their “inability to protect” the fishermen.
