Police arrested members of Naam Tamizhar Katchi when they attempted to picket the Collector’s camp office here on Tuesday, protesting against the alleged irregularities in the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Led by ‘Venkulam’ D. Raju, zonal deputy secretary, nine members of the party were proceeding to Collector’s camp office when the police arrested them. They were produced before a magistrate court which remanded them in judicial custody.

Alleging that those employed under the MGNRGES at Karungudi village in RS Mangalam union were not paid wages for nearly a year, Mr. Raju said that the protest was to draw the attention of the district administration to irregularities in the implementation of the scheme and demand action against those involved. He also said that under SBM and MGNRGES beneficiaries who constructed individual toilets were not given subsidy.
