As many as 3,444 women in the age group of 14 to 35 years appeared for the literacy assessment test held under the ‘Karkum Bharatham’ (Saakshar Bharat Mission Scheme) in different centres in 309 village panchayats across the district on Sunday.
Salem is one of the nine districts in the State where the Centre introduced the ‘Karkum Bharatham’, an adult literacy programme exclusively for women, way back in 2009.
Women were identified through special campaigns and imparted training in basic literacy at the special literacy centres functioning in all the 385 village panchayats in the district.
The National Institute of Open Schooling and the National Literacy Mission, on behalf of the Human Resource Development Department, conducted the examinations on Sunday to assess the basic literacy talent of the women who joined the programme. The district accounted for 3.57 lakh illiterate women when the programme was launched in 2009. Already 3.54 lakh women have successfully completed the literacy programme in the district.
This was the final phase of the examination under the programme, which was attended by 3,444 women.
