Sankar, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police who was arrested on a charge of raping a minor girl, has been placed under suspension even as Assistant Superintendent of Police Vandita Pandey began enquiring the victim for identifying other accused in the case.
After the women police arrested the SI, attached to Town police station here on October 7, Superintendent of Police M. Durai ordered his suspension on Friday and the order was served on him on Saturday, police sources said.
The police official was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012 along with three others on a charge of abusing the girl, who was rescued by the District Child Welfare Committee in June. Meanwhile, the ASP, accompanied by Sivaganga All-Women Police Inspector, conducted enquiry with the girl, who was studying in a college in Chennai, to corroborate her statement made before a Magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the sources said.
Further arrests would be made in the case after the team completed the enquiry and returned here, the sources said.
The women police have so far arrested six persons, including the SI, a conductor of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary based on the victim’s statement.
