Union Minister G K Vasan said Tamil Nadu ranked first in several spheres as the UPA led central government and the ruling DMK government in the state, its constituent, have coordinated and worked in harmony.

“It is only because the DMK government in the state and UPA government at the centre coordinated and worked in harmony that Madurai Airport got International status, CENVAT (Central Value Added Tax) was cancelled for handloom weavers and they got loan waiver of Rs 3,000 crore,” he said at an election meeting here last night.

Tuticorin had trebled its handling capacity and was now the gate way for Tamil Nadu, he said, adding the government would be spending Rs 4,500 crore on development of the outer port. A Rs 250 crore Special Economic Zone was being created in Tuticorin port area, he said.

“The April 13 assembly poll is crucial as the Centre has three more years to complete its term, needing a State government that will cooperate and coordinate with it,” he added.
