Karunanidhi hails court’s intervention

July 03, 2012 03:08 am | Updated July 05, 2016 07:36 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday welcomed the Madras High Court’s intervention that ensured no wedding or wedding reception would be allowed at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium at Kotturpuram.

“Misusing the library”

Talking to reporters, Mr. Karunanidhi said the rulers were misusing the library because it was conceived, constructed and inaugurated by him when he was the Chief Minister and the court had put an end to it.

“It should be appreciated and welcomed,” he said.

Asked about the reports that police might resort to arrest of DMK activists to prevent them from participating in the ‘jail bharo’ agitation, Mr. Karunanidhi said senior DMK leader Arcot N. Veeraswami had obtained an order from the Madras High Court against such measures. “Let us wait and see whether the police will respect the court order or not.”

To a question on the nomination of candidate for the Vice-President’s post, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had nothing to do with it.

“It is not my job”

“It is not my job. I have proposed the UPA’s candidate for the President’s post and my job is over,” the DMK leader said.

Mr. Karunanidhi also criticised the government for inaction on many issues.

“The Mettur dam, which was slated to open on June 12, has not yet been opened. Farmers in Cauvery delta region are shedding tears over the failure of the kuruvai crop. There is no guarantee of power supply to farmers. We don’t know whether there is a government in Tamil Nadu or it is taking rest in Kodanad,” the DMK chief said.
