An online polling being carried out by the government to identify the most preferred sectors to be developed to make Tirupur a Smart City, has shown a clear preference for improving Information Technology connectivity.

D.P. Pradeep, senior project engineer of Mahindra Consulting Engineers Limited, the company entrusted by the Union Government with the preparation of Smart City proposal for Tirupur, told The Hindu that 25 per cent of those who had polled, wanted IT connectivity to be improved.

“It is followed by the need to purify water bodies. About 18 per cent of those polled wanted it. The online method of collecting suggestions will go on for some more days,” he said.

Polling

Mr. Pradeep added that since the online method could not be accessed by a section of people, a physical polling was planned over two days towards the end of the month.

“About 30 polling booths will be set up across the city and people will be given options to select from a list their preferences that needed improvement,” he said. The corporation has planned essay writing competitions for students and for elders in which they could express their views reducing the critical gaps, if any, in the existing infrastructure.

The essay should be submitted to Tirupur Corporation before October 28 either by post or online at Mygov.in.The views obtained through online and physical balloting, and essay contests would be considered while drafting the final Smart City proposal, said Mr. Pradeep.
