The Madras High Court on Monday directed the State government to file its counter affidavit to a public interest litigation petition filed by activist ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy, seeking a direction to it to give up the proposal to convert former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence Veda Nilayam as a memorial at State’s cost.
He also wanted the government to attach all her movable and immovable properties to recover a fine of ₹ 100 crore imposed by the court in a disproportionate assets case. A Division Bench of Justices Vineet Kothari and Anita Sumanth directed the Government Pleader to make sure that a counter affidavit was filed within two weeks.
Though the GP sought a short adjournment for enabling the appearance of Advocate General Vijay Narayan, the judges insisted that a counter affidavit should be filed.
