‘Focus on passenger amenities, punctuality of train services’

DRM says another important aspect is safety of trains

Divisional Railway Manager Neenu Ittyerah has said her focus is on improving passenger amenities and cleanliness on railway premises and trains, and improving punctuality in running of trains.

Ms. Ittyerah, who assumed office here in April, told The Hindu that passengers on entering railway stations would require information about the trains and their timings. “There should be somebody (from the railway) for the passengers to ask questions regarding platforms (on which particular trains would arrive), and whether the wait-listed tickets are confirmed,” she said.

Other major requirement for passengers would be drinking water and reasonable catering and clean toilets. The DRM said she was working to ensure these basic amenities at all stations.

On running of trains, she said daily monitoring of punctuality had paid off . During the recent diversion of trains for taking up engineering works, closer monitoring led to the trains running ahead of the schedule, she said.

“We do not discriminate between passenger and express trains. Only during emergencies, do we give priority to express trains,” she said.

In order to improve safety of trains, the division had planned to replace 21 level crossing gates with limited use subways and eliminate 10 level crossing gates by diverting road traffic to the nearest gates.

“Regular safety education programmes are conducted across the division to educate people to use foot overbridges for crossing the tracks,” she said, adding life of every person was important.
